Giver Project:
I made this Presentation, after I did volunteer hours at The Ronald McDonald House, where I made a meal for them. I chose this item of my work, because it was a huge part of my grade and I am very proud of it. I am glad I got to do volunteer hours just like they did in the Giver book. I think it shows a lot about what I have done this year, and how interactive my English class is.
Journal Pages:
Hour 1: Ronald McDonald House
I went to Costco to get all the things I needed to make a meal at The Ronald McDonald House. I bought all the ingredients I needed for making the meal. I also got pie and cookies for dessert. I decided to make poppy seed chicken casserole, with caramelized green beans, bread, a fresh salad, and cold drinks. I went all around the store getting the ingredients needed. After I bought all the things I needed, well my mom bought them, I went home, to start preparing the meal.
Hour 2: Ronald McDonald House
I went home and started prepping for the meal. When I unpacked the groceries, I started boiling the chicken for the casserole. While the chicken was boiling, I started baking the bacon for the green beans. While those things were cooking, I started making the sauce for the green beans. When the chicken was done, I cut it up, so it was ready to be taken to The Ronald McDonald House. When the bacon was done, I finished packing up all the things I needed to make the meal.
Hour 3: Ronald McDonald House
I started loading up the car with all the things I needed for the meal.. On the way to The Ronald McDonald House, I planned out what I was going to do/make first. When we arrived, we met the director, Elizabeth Dever, and we met the operations director, Vicky Garcia. They gave us a tour of the Ronald McDonald House, and showed us where we would make the meal.
Hour 4: Ronald McDonald House
I unpacked everything for the casserole, because I needed to get that started first. To make the casserole, I mixed the chopped cooked chicken with sour cream and cream of chicken soup. Then I topped it with crushed Ritz crackers, butter, and, of course, poppy seeds. Then I started making the green beans. To make the caramelized green beans, I boiled the green beans, then I mixed them with the sauce, which included soy sauce, sugar, onions, and pepper. Then finally, I added the crumbled bacon.
Hour 5: Ronald McDonald House
I started baking the casseroles, and some bread rolls I brought. I put together a fresh salad, with tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, croutons, and carrots. With the salad I put a few different types of dressing, so they could pick the dressing they wanted on their salad. I found some plates in the kitchen to serve the meal. I got the drinks out that I brought and put them on ice. Once all of the food was ready, I set it out on the buffet so that everyone could make their own plates.
Hour 6: Ronald McDonald House
After everyone was done eating, I washed the dishes, along with my parents and my friend, Katherine. I also wiped the tables, counters, and stove. I mopped the floor and started cleaning up the rest of the stuff. Some of the leftover food was left for the families to eat for lunch the next day. I packed up the car with all the extra stuff I brought.
Hour 7: PCC Children’s Ministry
I helped at my church’s children's ministry. They have tickets, where if they answer questions, they get a certain amount of tickets. I helps hand out the kids mats. Then I helped the five through seven year olds with their craft, which was a booklet about the Judges. I helped them glue on the pictures of each prophet, and the paragraph about them that came with it. I also handed out snacks, which was water and granola puffs.
Hour 8: PCC Children’s Ministry
I handed out the tickets to a lot of kids that night, because they were all answering a lot of questions. Once everyone got their mat from me, I helped with the lesson, then I helped again, with the five through seven year olds, and I helped them make a chinese dragon, by coloring, and cutting out the dragons, and glueing them to sticks, so the dragons could dance. Then they had their usual snack, which i handed out, which was water and granola puffs.
Hour 9: PCC Children’s Ministry
I handed out about two-hundred tickets, because they were practicing for their christmas songs, and they did great. I helped them get their mats, and they listened to the lesson. I again helped with the five through seven year olds, but I also helped with the three and four year olds this time. I helped them all with their craft, which was paper lanterns. I got snacks for all of them. I got them all water, but the three through four year olds have cereal, rather than granola puffs, which is what I got the five through seven year olds.
Hour 10: PCC Children’s Ministry
All of the kids went up on stage to sing, and the little kids needed guidance, so I led them up and down. Once they were done, they did a christmas lesson, about Jesus’ birth. Then I helped the five through seven year olds make Christmas cards for their parents. Once they finished the Christmas cards, I helped in some Christmas related games.
